Sir Alex's men became the first team to qualify for this season's Champions League knock-out round and the job was completed with two games to spare.

Michael Carrick helped the Reds get off to the ideal start with the winner in the opening match against Galatasaray at Old Trafford in September. Nani missed a penalty after the break, but United held out for the victory.

Three wins out of three followed, although the Reds were forced to come from behind in every game, away to Cluj and home and away to Braga, in order to pick up maximum points which also ensured qualification for the last 16.

United tasted defeat in the final two group matches, away to Galatasaray and at home to Cluj, but neither result affected the team's position as Group H winners.
