UEFA Cup, 1st round, 2nd leg
29 September 1976
United: Stepney; Nicholl, B.Greenhoff, Buchan, Houston; Coppell, Daly, McIlroy, McCreery, Hill; Macari.
Subs: Albiston, Paterson.
The Reds were beaten 1-0 in the first-round, first-leg tie in Amsterdam but overturned the deficit with a fine 2-0 success in Manchester in front of a noisy home crowd.
Lou Macari pounced on the rebound to fire in the opening goal of the night when goalkeeper Piet Schrijvers could only spill a Gordon Hill shot into the Scot's path just before the break.
A lovely move completed the comeback in the second half as Jimmy Nicholl's pass was played on by Steve Coppell for Brian Greenhoff to cross and Sammy McIlroy was left with the simplest of finishes from close range.
