Paul Scholes marked his 500th appearance for Manchester United by setting the Reds on the way to a 2-0 triumph against Liverpool in 2006.
The midfielder was on hand to score at the second attempt after Pepe Reina half-blocked his initial attempt with the assist provided by Ryan Giggs from the left wing.
Rio Ferdinand then wrapped up the three points by repeating his feat of nine months earlier against the Merseysiders. The centre-back's touch in a crowded area superbly teed up a left-foot finish that rifled its way into the top corner of the net.
United, worthy winners in front of a record crowd, returned to the top of the Barclays Premiership - the position the Reds would occupy as champions in the following May after three seasons without the title.
