6 December 1997, Anfield
MANCHESTER UNITED 3
(Cole 51, 74; Beckham 70)
Liverpool: James, Kvarme (Berger 60), Matteo, Carragher, Bjornebye (Riedle 72), McAteer, Redknapp, Leonhardsen, McManaman, Owen, Fowler.
United: Schmeichel, Neville G, Berg, Pallister, Neville P, Beckham, Johnsen, Butt, Giggs, Cole, Sheringham.
However the headlines belonged to Andy Cole, who opened the scoring with a low finish moments after the half-time break before Robbie Fowler drew the Merseysiders level from the penalty spot with half an hour to go.
Beckham then produced his party piece to regain the lead before Cole sealed a deserved victory, tapping in Teddy Sheringham’s flick for his fifteenth goal of the season.
“We looked the better side and I’m delighted by the win,” said Sir Alex Ferguson. “You always get it hard at Anfield – we had to really perform today.”
Unfortunately, this would later stand out as one of the season's few highlights. Life after Cantona proved tough when injuries took their toll and the Reds ultimately lost the title to Arsenal.
