United moved towards the brink of the Barclays Premier League title with a 1-0 win at Manchester City in 2007.
Michael Ball escaped with a stamp on Cristiano Ronaldo but was penalised for a blatant trip on the winger inside the box and the Portugal international nervelessly converted the spot-kick past Andreas Isaksson.
Rio Ferdinand headed against the bar while City offered precious little in attack as the game wore on.
But there was late drama when referee Rob Styles awarded a debatable penalty after Ball tumbled inside the box under a challenge from Wes Brown. Darius Vassell stepped up with 11 minutes left but could only fire against Edwin van der Sar to spark real scenes of celebration on the bench as the Reds clinched a deserved success.
