"You try to do the right thing: score goals, play well, do your job. You pick up on the history of the club just by being here and talking to people but you never know what's going to happen."

United Archives: Forlan

Back in late 2003, Diego Forlan gave an exclusive interview to United Review, the official matchday programme.

The Uruguayan was starting to hit the net regularly, mustering seven from nine starts in all competitions at the time, and had scored in four consecutive matches in October and November.

You've had more starts and goals than ever this season. You must be delighted with the progress you've made..
Yes. When you have the chance to play and have a run of games, your confidence rises and, when you score goals too, it's different. My favourite game was probably the win over Liverpool. It was an important game for both teams and a very good performance. My favourite goal was the one against Rangers because it was a nice goal, one of the best I've scored.

Did you feel added pressure because Ruud van Nistelrooy was sitting on the bench and you were leading the forward line for once?
No, because it's great just getting picked and I need to take every chance to play. Ruud was possibly not very fit for the Panathinaikos game so I tried my best, like I always do.

Sir Alex has compared you to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who came to the club young and steadily improved over the years. Praise indeed...
It's really nice to hear the manager say good things about you. When Mr Ferguson talks, you listen, so I was happy to hear that.

Is it your ambition to become a United legend?
You try to do the right thing: score goals, play well, do your job. You pick up on the history of the club just by being here and talking to people but you never know what's going to happen.

But if you continue to score important goals, like Solskjaer has, then your name will go down in history..
I'm not thinking about that. I'm happy playing and enjoying scoring goals. Sometimes you look forward but only to the next few games - hoping you can do the same job.

It must be an inspiration to look around the dressing room and see people like Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane, who have won every honour going but still show an unbelievable desire..
It is. It's brilliant to look at what Giggsy and Keano have achieved - the way they play, the way they do everything.
