On this day (17 March) five years ago, Ji-sung Park scored his first brace for United in a comfortable 4-1 win over Bolton that moved the Reds closer to a first title in four seasons.
After United lost Gary Neville to injury early on, Park gave the home side the lead when he smashed home after good work down the left by his fellow winger Cristiano Ronaldo.
Three minutes later,Wayne Rooney capped a superb counter-attack, orchestrated by Ronaldo again, with a deft finish to make it 2-0.
And as the half-hour approached, Park scored his second and United’s third, reacting quickest after Jussi Jaaskelainen had spilled Ronaldo’s shot from the edge of the box.
United eased off after the break but a fourth arrived with 16 minutes left as Rooney ran onto Alan Smith’s lofted pass to ruthlessly volley home.
Gary Speed converted a late penalty for the visitors, dubiously awarded for a Nemanja Vidic push on Abdoulaye Faye, but it was scant consolation as United stayed six points clear with eight games left.
