Tales of 11/12: Young guns

Our summer series takes a look at some of the season's many positives and sub-plots...

Summer signings David De Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young weren't the only men to make their senior United debuts during the 2011/12 campaign.

Six products of the club's academy also played a competitive first-team fixture for the first time, while a seventh prodigy, Danny Welbeck, pushed his appearances tally well beyond the quarter-century mark where he'd left it in 2009/10.

Tom Cleverley was the first homegrown debutant of the season, coming on as a substitute in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City at Wembley. The Carling Cup trip to Leeds United was a special night for three young players as Ezekiel Fryers started before Larnell Cole and Paul Pogba entered the fray from the bench. The club's latest set of brothers followed suit when first Michael Keane - in the Carling Cup win at Aldershot - and then Will Keane - in the home league defeat to Blackburn Rovers - opened their senior appearances accounts. Congratulations to them all.
