Eric Cantona was officially unveiled to the media as a Manchester United player 20 years ago today (27 November 1992), and his new boss Alex Ferguson was evidently pleased with this transfer coup.
"He's a Manchester United player," the boss purred. "He's an exciting player and he has got all the assets of the best players in the world."
The Reds boss was clearly in triumphal mood. "We look at it as progress for him," he said. "He's coming to a big, big club. Leeds is a fabulous, big club, but I think he'll find that Manchester United is even bigger. And that's maybe the stage he needs."
With those prescient words, the Reds manager looked ahead to an exciting future. Asked by the reporter: 'A fiery Frenchman and, with due respect, a fiery Scot - how's that relationship going to work?'. "Well the French and the scots have a great, old alliance if you know you're history," he said. "I'm hoping this is part of a new alliance."
