'Roy of the Rovers' stuff for teen sub Macheda
United 3 (Ronaldo 14, 80, Macheda 90) Aston Villa 2 (Carew 30, Agbonlahor 58) | 5 April 2009
With the Reds' title bid faltering, Sir Alex gambled on throwing rookie strikers Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda into the fray.
Liverpool's fans had chanted about winning the league following a last-gasp win at Fulham the previous day and, despite Cristiano Ronaldo's clever opener from a free-kick inside the box, the pressure appeared to be getting to United.
Gareth Barry set up John Carew's equaliser and Gabriel Agbonlahor silenced Old Trafford with a brave header. However, the ever-reliable Ronaldo beat Brad Friedel with a low shot from distance and constant pressure was applied in the closing 10 minutes. Friedel thwarted Welbeck but there was still time for Macheda to turn sharply and bend the sweetest of finishes past the American keeper. Cue bedlam at the Theatre of Dreams!
