Manchester United 1 Chelsea 0 | League Cup 5th round | Tuesday 17 December 2002
United’s last League Cup win over Chelsea came in December 2002, when man-of-the-moment Diego Forlan put the Reds through to the semi-finals for the first time in eight years.
A rip-roaring tie at Old Trafford seemed destined for extra-time until Forlan latched onto a David Beckham through-ball in the 81st minute and crashed a low shot past Carlo Cudicini.
It was the Uruguayan’s seventh goal of the season and fourth in his last three starts, coming just over a fortnight after his celebrated brace against Liverpool at Anfield.
Both sides had numerous chances to break the deadlock earlier in an open, entertaining game, but it was Forlan who sealed United’s first home win over Chelsea in three seasons and only a fourth success against the Blues in 20 attempts at Old Trafford.
