Dinamo Bucharest took on the Reds in a two-legged qualifying round in August 2004. It wasn’t looking good early in the first leg in the Romanian capital as Quinton Fortune put through his own net, but Ryan Giggs levelled before the break and Angelo Alistar’s own goal 20 minutes from time gave United the advantage.
The return at Old Trafford was more comfortable and United ran out 3-0 winners – 5-1 on aggregate – thanks to a brace for new recruit Alan Smith and one for David Bellion.
Last season’s group stage pitted the Reds against relative unknowns Otelul Galati. Sir Alex’s side needed two Wayne Rooney penalties to secure the points in the away encounter, holding on for a 2-0 win after Nemanja Vidic was controversially sent off.
Antonio Valencia gave United an early lead in the home game the following month and Rooney netted late on to surpass team-mate Paul Scholes as the highest scoring Englishman in the competition.
