United 92/93: September

Every month during 2012/13, we're looking back at how Manchester United fared in the corresponding period 20 years ago, en route to winning the first Premier League title...

After a spluttering start to 1992/93, the Reds began to display promising form with three consecutive wins and clean sheets in September.

Mark Hughes converted a Brian McClair cross to see off Crystal Palace at Old Trafford (1-0) and a psychological blow was delivered to reigning champions Leeds when Andrei Kanchelskis and Steve Bruce netted in a 2-0 triumph. Just 31,260 fans at Old Trafford witnessed that early-season affair on 6 September 1992, the Stretford End being an empty redevelopment site at the time.

A tricky trip to Everton was overcome with McClair opening the scoring and Bruce adding a penalty after Neville Southall up-ended Kanchelskis - sweet revenge for losing the very first Premier League game at Old Trafford to the Toffees just a few weeks earlier.

September 1992's domestic fixtures finished with two draws - the first at Tottenham featured an outstanding solo strike by Ryan Giggs before a goalless stalemate with QPR.
