Manchester United’s hopes of winning the Double were extinguished on Easter Monday after Demba Ba’s instinctive finish decided the FA Cup sixth-round replay in Chelsea's favour.
Playing just 48 hours after beating Sunderland in the Barclays Premier League, the Reds were understandably slow starters during a cagey opening at Stamford Bridge, where both sides struggled to create many scoring chances during a lacklustre first half.
The game eventually sparked into life just after the half-time break when Ba latched onto Juan Mata’s fine pass to hook past David De Gea, who could do little to prevent the effort. United reacted moments later and almost scored when Chicharito’s header was brilliantly saved by the impressive Petr Cech.
Sir Alex Ferguson, who had made seven changes to his starting line-up, tried to alter things with time running out by introducing Robin van Persie, Ryan Giggs and Ashley Young to the action but his efforts were ultimately in vain as the home side held on.
