The Manchester derby has always meant a lot within the confines of the city, but the magnitude of the fixture was dramatically inflated in 2008 when City were plucked from obscurity by Sheikh Mansour and the Abu Dhabi Group, whose investment transformed the club overnight.
Since then, the Blues have ended a 35-year wait for silverware by lifting the FA Cup before claiming the Premier League title last season, a feat no Red needs reminding of. Additional factors, including the transfer of Carlos Tevez, have also fuelled the fire of this burgeoning battle.
As a result, the derby is now more a grand occasion of state than a football match. Headlines and silverware increasingly congregate in Manchester, which is now the unquestioned football capital of the country.
