Derby duels: Defenders

MUTV pundit and ex-Red David May assesses United's and City's full-backs…

I think he has been outstanding this season, I really do. He’s come on ten-fold this year. The consistency of his performances has improved vastly. A couple of years ago, he was maybe a little rash – he would try to win tackles when he just need to stay on his feet. But he’s come on so much this year and the goals he has scored have been brilliant.

Phil Jones
Phil Jones is more a centre-half. Chris Smalling has done well when needed at right-back, but I think Rafael will get the nod there.

Patrice Evra
Since Alexander Büttner has come in, Patrice has stepped his game back up again. He’s proved to everybody what a good full-back he is and he’s scored important goals too.

Pablo Zabaleta
I think he has been one of the highlights in the City team this season. Going forward he is very, very good and gets some important goals. He has come on in the last couple of years. I think City have missed the power and presence of Micah Richards, who’s been out for five months but I think it’d be a big ask to throw him back in now even if he is deemed fit enough to play. Aleksandar Kolarov
He’s solid and has an incredible left foot. He’s very powerful and loves to strike free-kicks. He loves to get forward but he is a little bit susceptible to pace.
