ManUtd.com is assessing all of the Reds' potential Champions League last 16 opponents, with Russian side Zenit St Petersburg next to face our examination…
How did they fare in Group C? Currently riding high at the top of the Russian league, things didn’t quite go smoothly in the Champions League for Zenit. Despite only one win in the group stage, the Blue and Whites scraped through to the knockout rounds behind runaway group winners Atletico Madrid.
The campaign began with a 3-1 defeat to Atletico, then Zenit earned a point against Austria Vienna before their only victory of the group came in Portugal via a 1-0 win over Porto. Two respectable 1-1 draws then followed against Porto and Atletico, before a rather embarrassing 4-1 reverse at the hands of Austria Vienna capped a rather mixed group stage for the Russians.
What was their standout result? It has to be Zenit’s solitary win, the 1-0 triumph at Estádio do Dragão which came courtesy of Alexander Kerzhakov’s 86th-minute strike.
Who are the men to watch? Former Arsenal man Andrey Arshavin is now back at the club where he first rose to prominence. Should Zenit draw the Reds he will hoping to pull out a repeat performance of his dazzling display at Old Trafford in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat of 2009. Other notable members of Zenit’s squad include forwards Hulk and Danny – the latter scored against United in the 2008
