RvP nets goal award

Robin van Persie’s superb late equaliser in the FA Cup third round tie at West Ham has been voted Manchester United’s Goal of the Month for January.

In stoppage-time at Upton Park, the Dutchman expertly controlled Ryan Giggs’ sumptuous long ball before slotting home with his right foot to earn the Reds a replay and break Hammers hearts.

The strike was a runaway winner in the polls on our seven official language websites, picking up 49 per cent of the votes.

The winner of our competition, who picks up a home shirt signed by van Persie, is Raj Maharjan from Dublin.

In second place from the eight-goal shortlist was van Persie’s effort at Wigan (16 per cent), with Tom Cleverley’s curler in the West Ham tie third (11 per cent).

Also nominated were goals by Under-18s starlets Jack Barmby and James Weir v Bolton, van Persie v Liverpool and Wayne Rooney v Fulham and Southampton.
