deflected effort in front of around 11,000 travelling Burton fans.

Reading 2 United 3, 5th round replay, 27.02.07
Brynjar Gunnarsson cancelled out Michael Carrick’s stunning drive in the first leg as United rued a glut of missed chances. If profligacy was rife there, then three goals in the first six minutes of the replay was an emphatic response. Gabriel Heinze, Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all netted early on at the Madejski Stadium but Steve Coppell’s Reading wouldn’t give up and fought back through Dave Kitson on 23 minutes and Leroy Lita with six minutes to go, setting up a nervy finish.

United 1 Middlesbrough 0, 6th round replay, 19.03.07
Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty proved sufficient to take United into the semi-finals. The man whose goal forced the replay at The Riverside was fouled by Jonathan Woodgate and beat Mark Schwarzer from the spot. James Morrison was later sent off for a wild challenge on the Portuguese winger.
