Gallery: Saints sunk

It wasn’t pretty, but victory was all that mattered on Wednesday as Manchester United beat Southampton to move seven points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Barclays Premier League.

The Saints made the brighter start at Old Trafford, though, after Jay Rodriguez pounced on Michael Carrick’s disappointing back-pass to slot underneath David De Gea.

Thankfully, the Reds rallied and managed to head into the half-time break with a well-deserved lead thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney and two admirable assists from Shinji Kagawa and Patrice Evra.

A boggy pitch hindered a frustrating second half with the visitors controlling most of the play, but Mauricio Pochettino’s men were unable to find a breakthrough as United secured a crucial win.

Club photographers John and Matt Peters were on hand to capture the best of the action and you can view a gallery of images from game by clicking on the main photo above.
