The toughest possible draw took the Reds across Manchester to the Etihad Stadium but the first-half turned into a cakewalk. Vincent Kompany was sent off after Wayne Rooney's headed opener before Danny Welbeck and Rooney, with a rebound from a penalty, made it 3-0 at the interval. City hit back thanks to Aleksandar Kolarov and Sergio Aguero but United safely reached round four, aided by Paul Scholes coming out of retirement as a second-half substitute.
