United's January signings

Sir Alex Ferguson is "not looking to do any serious transfer business in January" but this was the exception, rather than the rule, in the first decade of the winter transfer window.

Since its inception in 2002/03, the boss has used the window in eight out of 10 seasons, even if he openly prefers to do most of his business during the summer. 

In fact, deals for six current first-team players were either sealed or announced at this time of year, dating back to 2006 when Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic arrived from Monaco and Spartak Moscow respectively. The news of Manchester United's deal to sign Vidic actually broke on Christmas Day 2005 but the double signing was ratified in January and the pair have long been mainstays of the defence.

Some previously-reported transfers that were officially confirmed in January include Anders Lindegaard in 2011 while twins Rafael and Fabio arrived in Manchester in the first month of 2008, even though they were ineligible to play until later that year.

A move was agreed for Fulham defender Chris Smalling in January 2010 but the deal did not
