Tottenham Hotspur 1 United 2 | Division One | Saturday 1 December 1979 | Att: 51,389
On a blustery north London afternoon in December 1979, league leaders Manchester United went to White Hart Lane with just one victory from eight away games - and then doubled that tally by snaffling the points with a late winner from Steve Coppell.
Late '70s Spurs were the glamour side of the top flight, with exotic Argentinian imports Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa adding to the stylish creativity of Glenn Hoddle. And that class showed in the first half when Villa's reverse ball into Hoddle's path was coolly stroked into the net by the newly-capped England international.
The Reds, though, were much improved in the second period and on the hour, when Jimmy Nicholl's cross was controlled by Sammy McIlroy, United players were queueing up to score – Lou Macari was the one who forced the ball home. A draw seemed the likely outcome, but with just four minutes remaining, Joe Jordan found a pocket of space on the left. The onrushing Mickey Thomas attracted both keeper Aleksic and last defender Gordon Smith and when they all missed Jordan's centre, the unmarked Coppell sidefooted into an empty net.
United: Bailey; Nicholl, Buchan, Moran, Grimes; Coppell, Wilkins, McIlroy, Thomas; Macari, Jordan. Scorers: Macari 60, Coppell 87.
