There is a code of conduct in press rooms at sporting events which demands impartiality, and yet most journalists could describe an occasion when, wrapped in the moment, they couldn't help but flout that convention. This was mine.
It wasn't just the occasion, a Champions League semi-final second leg, or the opponents, Barcelona with Lionel Messi beginning to cast his spell on European football. It was also that nine years previously, in 1999, Paul Scholes missed United's Treble-defining night in Barcelona's Camp Nou through suspension. And here he was spectacularly correcting that particular piece of historical injustice.
After a goalless draw in Catalunya, Eto'o, Messi, Deco, Xavi, Iniesta, Yaya Toure and co. arrived in Manchester, but one man rose above the rest and he was in red. On 14 minutes, Scholes collected a loose ball and, as it bobbled up invitingly, he struck a beautifully arcing shot into the top corner. Barca keeper Victor Valdes drew back his hand mid-air such was his futility in stopping it. Scholes, modest as ever, claims he shinned. I'm not having that. It was a great moment, well worth celebrating.
