In eight trophy-laden seasons at Old Trafford, arch poacher Andy Cole was famed for his ruthlessness – a quality required again in picking his Reds dream team. Same rules as always: 16 players, all former team-mates except one wildcard entry…
I’ve gone for a 4-4-2 because I never played in a 4-3-3, so I’ll stick to what I know. Picking the team itself was so tough – now I know how Sir Alex felt all these years. At least he had plenty of games to rotate his squad. I’ve only got one shot at this!
GK: Peter Schmeichel A frightening presence, and people still underestimate his part in United’s success.
RB: Gary Neville Gaz loves United and was the best right-back I played with during my time at the club.
CB: Jaap Stam When Jaap was on his game he was awesome, and another with a huge presence.
CB: Gary Pallister Inspector Gadget! He’d always get to the ball – even if he did think football was hard work!
LB: Denis Irwin You could play Denis left or right, it made no difference because he was that good.
RM: David Beckham Becks was just so good for United. Those deliveries were a dream for a striker.
CM: Roy Keane (captain) I loved Incey and Butty, but I have to go for Roy for his phenomenal leadership.
CM: Paul Scholes One of the very best. He made football look far easier than it was supposed to be.
LM: Ryan Giggs An unbelievable talent. Still at the highest level and doing it whenever he gets the chance.
ST: Eric Cantona An incredible footballer and a great guy, with such a massive presence about him.
ST: Ruud van Nistelrooy Ruud’s goalscoring at United was ridiculous – his record is second to none.
