Gallery: The Magnificent 7s

Few shirts in world football are as iconic as Manchester United's no.7.

Argentina's no.10? Sure. After all, it's been worn by Maradona and Messi. Holland's no.14? Perhaps. Johan Cruyff made it his own during the 1970s and was even allowed to wear it at the 1974 World Cup when the rest of the Dutch side was numbered alphabetically (Cruyff should have been no.1).

In English football, though, no shirt comes close to evoking the same sense of magic and mystique as that of the no.7 at Manchester United.

At Old Trafford, it's synonymous with style, charisma and more than a little bit of individualism. As Antonio Valencia, the shirt's current wearer, says: "Many legendary players have passed through the club and worn that shirt, players who were almost larger than life."

Certainly, some of the biggest names to ever grace the turf in M16 have run out with no.7 on their back. From George Best to Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo, United's no.7s have been truly magnificent.

Now, in the week when Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford with Real Madrid, you can view a gallery of seven Reds no.7s by clicking the image above. Then, why not browse the online store where you'll find Nike's collection of leisurewear inspired by United's no.7s?
