Manchester United took another step towards regaining the Barclays Premier League title with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The Reds dominated the first half and went in at the break with a deserved lead thanks to an own goal from Titus Bramble, who stuck his leg out to block Robin van Persie’s powerful drive but only succeeded in diverting it into his own net.

The relegation-threatened hosts made a better fist of it in the second period but Sir Alex’s men, who lost Rafael to injury in the first half, withstood their sporadic pressure to temporarily move 18 points ahead of nearest challengers Manchester City, who later reduced it to 15 again by beating Newcastle United.
