It wasn’t a classic, but victory was all that mattered as Manchester United recorded a 1-0 win over Reading to move 15 points clear of title rivals Manchester City in the Barclays Premier League.
Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game, hitting a deflected effort off the leg of Alex Pearce and over the helpless Stuart Taylor to put the Reds ahead on 20 minutes.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side largely dominated from there on in but ultimately struggled to create many meaningful chances, though Robin van Persie twice went close with a 25-yard free-kick and an acrobatic volley in the second half.
The only sour note was an injury to Ashley Young, who was forced to exit the action for Michael Carrick after taking a heavy blow to the ankle following a robust challenge from Jobi McAnuff.
