Great captains: Robson

What makes a great United captain? It's a question Manchester United Soccer Schools are asking in their Take the Lead campaign and we thought we’d try to answer it. ManUtd.com's Adam Marshall uses his favourite example: Bryan Robson...

What made him a great captain? Bryan Robson was the ultimate captain - a leader of men and a fearless and ferocious competitor. Aside from his obvious talent on the ball, he set the tone in matches for his United colleagues with his bravery and ability to dominate matches by marauding all over the pitch.

Most memorable moment? There were many highlights in terms of goals and match-winning displays but something that sticks in the mind is the way opponents respected him. When Vinnie Jones was intimidating other rivals, Robson put him firmly in his place on the final day of the glorious 1993 title-winning season with a performance of steely-eyed authority.
