Great captains: Vidic

What makes a great United captain? It's a question Manchester United Soccer Schools are asking in their Take the Lead campaign and we thought we’d try to answer it. Inside United editor Ben Ashby champions Nemanja Vidic...

What made him a great captain? Simple – you look at him and see a man who'd header a cannonball, tackle a rhino, put his body in the way of a bus. When you see a man with the armband ready to run through a brick wall for the team it makes you want to follow. He leads by example. Strong deeds, not words.

Most memorable moment? There are a couple from the latter half of this season that stand out. One was a block against Everton in February – watch the replay in slo-mo and see the sheer determination to muscle Marouane Fellaini out of the way and launch himself in front of Leon Osman's shot. The other was a messy clash of coconuts with Reading's Noel Hunt. Vida didn't flinch, didn't even seem to notice. Is there a Terminator under there?
