Video: The wait is over!

Gary Pallister recalls the memorable match against Blackburn 20 years ago as the long wait to get our hands on the trophy ended..

"We knew we had to get our heads on pretty quickly. Walking out on the pitch was quite incredible. Banners, flags, scarves, everything was waving, it seemed the very stands were waving. There was just so much deep, deep emotion and we were bursting with pride.

"It was still 1-1 by the half-time interval, during which the lads started giving me stick for being the only regular outfielder who hadn't scored a league goal that season. I told them: 'Right, if we get a free-kick this half, it's mine, nobody else's, I'm going to take it!

"As if scripted from up above, in the 90th minute, we won a free-kick on the edge of their box. I put the ball down, spotted a little gap in the corner of the net and thought to myself: 'If I can shank this in the right direction, I might be all right here.'

"So I hit it hard and low, and it took the slightest of deflections and skidded past goalkeeper Bobby Mimms in exactly the intended spot. It was such a perfect way to cap the season.

"For many supporters of a certain age, that was the biggest night of the whole Sir Alex Ferguson era. In view of what was to follow in 1999, I know that's a lot to say but it was true. Those people had suffered 26 years of abuse, being forced to bow before Liverpool's serial supremacy, and that hell was over at last."
