It is just over 60 years since United thrashed Cardiff City 6-1, and with our next outing taking David Moyes’ side to the Welsh capital it’s an apt moment to take a look at some of the meetings between the two clubs around that time.

And another reason to recall that result is that it featured an early appearance from one of the greatest players in the history of this club, Duncan Edwards, who had made his debut against the Welsh outfit earlier in 1953.

A year before that big win for Matt Busby’s side the two clubs had met for the first time since 1929, following Cardiff’s promotion to Division One. United returned from Ninian Park – Cardiff’s home ground from 1910 to 2009 - with a 2-1 victory, but the tables were turned in the return fixture the following April, when Cardiff ran out 4-1 winners at Old Trafford.

However there was one piece of good news to emerge from that heavy defeat for the Reds – the first sighting of the extraordinarily talented Edwards, who Busby would later describe as the most 'complete footballer in Britain - possibly the world'.

Still aged just 16, Edwards’s debut came less than a year after he had joined the club. By the time United and Cardiff met again, on 14 November 1953, the powerful wing-half had signed professional terms and was establishing himself in the side despite his relatively tender age.

United’s 6-1 win, still the record winning margin in this fixture, came courtesy of two goals from striker Dennis Viollet, while Johnny Berry, Jackie Blanchflower, Jack Rowley and Tommy Taylor weighed in with one apiece.

Cardiff came away from Old Trafford with another win when the two sides met the following April, this time on the back of a 3-2 scoreline with Rowley and Viollet on target for United.
