The clever schemer was granted an opportunity to impress in his favoured central role and did not disappoint, helping to pull the strings in a record away triumph in the Champions League for the club.
MUTV pundits David May and Lee Sharpe sprung something of a surprise with a three-man shortlist of Kagawa, Antonio Valencia and Jonny Evans for the award despite the obvious claims of Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs, among others, in a fabulous team display.
"I've no complaints at all," said May of the result. "Maybe a few people may have different views to us two but Shinji was absolutely top drawer all night."
Sharpe agreed with the supporters' verdict, telling the official club TV channel: "He was really creative and entertaining to watch. He created chances and was great tonight."
