Robbo recalls Cup clash

In April 1985, United made the short trip to Maine Road for an FA Cup semi-final replay against old foes Liverpool.

Having suffered the disappointment of conceding late on to the Merseysiders in the initial encounter, the Reds needed to pick themselves up in order to avoid further heartbreak.

Thankfully for Ron Atkinson's men, the replay would prove to be a memorable encounter, with skipper Bryan Robson scoring a sensational goal to notch a vital equaliser.

"The replay went really well for us," Robson told ManUtd.com. "Paul McGrath scored an own goal which unfortunately put Liverpool in front, but then I scored probably my best goal for the club. It went straight into the top corner."

Buoyed by Captain Marvel's inspired intervention, the eventual FA Cup winners rallied, putting in a much-improved performance from that of the first half.

After a number of chances went begging for both sides, United's dynamic midfielder Gordon Strachan brought the ball out of defence and proceeded to thread through an excellent pass for a certain Welshman to slot home the winning goal.

"Thankfully, Sparky [Mark Hughes] managed to get the winner," Robson recalled. "It was great to beat a team like Liverpool and make the FA Cup final. It was a memorable moment."
