#11 - Ronaldo's Euro show

Next in our greatest international moments: Cristiano Ronaldo starring on home turf...

Player: Cristiano Ronaldo
Match: Portugal v Greece, 30 June 2004, Lisbon

Having made quite an impression in his first season at United, Cristiano Ronaldo made an impact for Portugal at Euro 2004 on home soil aged just 19.

The host nation's campaign got off to a poor start with a surprise 2-1 defeat to unfancied Greece, but Ronaldo had at least clawed back some respectability with a stoppage-time penalty that reduced the arrears.

Portugal bounced back to progress to the semi-finals, their passage to the last four including victory over England on penalties (how else?) in the quarter-finals. Their opponents in the semis were the Netherlands, the traditional tournament dark horses who had not reached a major final since winning the European Championship in 1988.

With the expectations of an entire nation resting on the Portuguese players' shoulders, Ronaldo settled nerves after 26 minutes, nipping in front of Michael Reiziger to nod the ball home. Maniche put Portugal 2-0 up before an Jorge Andrade own goal handed the Dutch a consolatory goal in a 2-1 defeat.

Sadly for Ronaldo, the hosts ended the tournament as they started it: defeat to the Greeks. But United's superstar-in-waiting had taken another step towards recognition as one of his generations finest talents.
