Rooney scoops goal prize

Wayne Rooney has made it a September double by picking up Manchester United’s Goal of the Month award, four days after receiving the player accolade.

The striker’s expertly-taken free-kick in the Manchester derby defeat on 22 September came out on top in our polls on ManUtd.com and its six foreign language versions.

It polled 38% of the votes, edging Adnan Januzaj’s rocket against Bolton Reserves (25%). Javier Hernandez’s volley in the Capital One Cup win over Liverpool came in third on 15%.

Rooney’s Etihad Stadium consolation was one of three free-kicks he has netted already for United this season; his first of the campaign against Crystal Palace was another effort in our eight-goal shortlist this month.

Also nominated were goals by Antonio Valencia (vs Bayer Leverkusen), Jesse Lingard (vs Bolton U21s), Demetri Mitchell (vs Leicester U18s) and James Wilson (vs Arsenal U18s).
