It doesn’t get much bigger than Liverpool versus Manchester United, a match between the two biggest and most successful clubs in English football.
As a result, Sunday’s match drew the gaze of the world as the Reds visited Anfield for the first time under new manager David Moyes, who has of course been there before with former club Everton - a sub-plot which added an extra flavour of spice to the occasion.
Before kick-off, the players and fans took part in a minute's applause in tribute to former Liverpool manager Bill Shankly, who was born 100 years ago on Sunday.
And in the end, the match was one akin to those contested in bygone eras with plenty of thrills, spills and a handful of yellow cards throughout a feisty encounter. The only downside was the result after Daniel Sturridge's solitary goal proved decisive.
As ever, official club photographers John and Matt Peters were in attendance to capture the action. And to help retell the story of the game, we've compiled the best of their work in the above gallery.
