Louis van Gaal is box-office value in his weekly pre-match press conferences – whether it’s challenging or teasing reporters, or getting his message across in his own inimitable way.
The enigmatic, entertaining Dutchman spoke about the reasons behind giving Wayne Rooney the captaincy and discussed the nine injuries within his squad ahead of the start of the new season – to which, he responded emphatically: “I am very confident. I am not nervous, you don’t see it – nine players injured and I am not nervous!”
Encouraging his new skipper to play with freedom when the season kicks off against Swansea, he urged Rooney: “Let it fly, let if fly! In the United States he scored a lot of goals and made a great amount of assists. So I want to see that Wayne.”
"Football is about entertaining the people," he added. "When there are no fans, nobody shall come. Even the broadcasters won't come. So it is very important that we please the fans."
We’ve put together a highlights reel of some of the best soundbites from today’s press conference at the Aon Training Complex.
