Goals from Darren Fletcher and Marouane Fellaini secured a slender 2-1 victory over Valencia on Tuesday evening as Louis van Gaal took charge of his first home match as Manchester United manager.

The Dutchman made his Old Trafford debut following this summer’s pre-season tour and received a warm welcome as he took the players’ warm-up, before a much louder ovation soundtracked his walk from the tunnel to the dugout prior to kick-off.

While the performance was not to the level he had hoped for, van Gaal admits he enjoyed the occasion and is looking forward to impressing the supporters this season.

"I enjoyed it," the boss told MUTV. "Coming onto the pitch, the fans are shouting and screaming your name... it's also a big pressure. They expect a lot and you can't change everything in three or four weeks. We have to wait and see and develop. We need time but we have won every game up until now and that's fantastic when you see our opponents."
