Video: Welbeck's six in six

We assess the recent goalscoring form of Danny Welbeck...

Danny Welbeck's football achievements to date are a source of pride for anyone who recognises the importance of local lads emerging through Manchester United's ranks but as the player himself admits, "strikers are judged on the number of goals they score."

To judge Welbeck on last season's goal tally of two goals in 40 matches would be misleading, however. His creative talents, speed and power were utilised in wide positions whilst new arrival Robin van Persie breathtakingly made the most of all his scoring nous and experience to help fire United to league title no.20.

This season, the Longsight-born forward has returned to the kind of goalscoring form he showed in 2011/12 when he registered 12 strikes in 39 appearances. That's partly due to position - he's been playing in a central role again of late - but also down to a new maturity in the final third where his composure and confidence in front of goal are beginning to make him look like the finished article.

Welbeck's run of six goals in his last six league games, from Aston Villa away on 15 December to Swansea at home on 11 January, has been essential to United's improving league form. And while the experienced van Persie and Wayne Rooney are still sidelined, Danny's prowess will continue to be of great importance to David Moyes' team.
