sure. The adulation was incredible. People recognise greatness. Just look at Nelson Mandela [when he died] a few weeks ago and the recognition he got worldwide. You don’t get that for many people, where everybody mourns at the same time. You very rarely get that for a human being.”
Busby had lived to see United’s 26-year title wait ended by a side playing with the verve and enjoyment so inherent in his Babes, guided by a man who would latterly crystallise the club’s position among the very biggest sporting institutions around.
Sir Matt’s standing is, to this day, embodied perfectly in his bronze statue outside Old Trafford’s East Stand. As Sir Alex Ferguson himself put it: “He was an incredible man and fantastic manager. He stood above everybody.”
