Overall contribution There were few more exciting sights on a football field than the jet-heeled winger in full flight, usually haring down the right or straight down the middle. On his day, he was unplayable and he developed more of a selfish streak to emerge as a regular goal threat. Eventually forcing Lee Sharpe largely onto the sidelines, he provided pace and a directness that ensured defences were always on the back foot.

Best performance Following Mark Hughes' late saver in the first FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, Kanchelskis ran Oldham ragged in the replay at Maine Road. He found the net after 15 minutes and generally terrorised the Latics after also turning on the style in the 5-2 win at Boundary Park earlier in the campaign. "He was our match winner," said Alex Ferguson. "Every time he had the ball, you expected something to happen."

Key moment Leeds' Elland Road is an intimidating venue and, after a goalless first half, Kanchelskis made the breakthrough only two minutes into the second period. It was another important step towards the title with Ryan Giggs wrapping things up five minutes from time.
