It sparked a debate almost as soon as the ball bounced over the line... was Wayne Rooney's wondrous first goal at West Ham better than David Beckham's similar strike against Wimbledon in 1996?
The two audacious efforts, scored eighteen years apart but on London grounds separated by fewer miles, have been compared by supporters, players and pundits. The latter group include Manchester United legends Lou Macari and Alex Stepney, who offered their expert opinions during MUTV's live post-match programme, Match Day Live.
Macari said: "David's goal was brilliant but he had time to size it up. Wayne had to do it a lot quicker and that's why it was a better goal for me."
