It wasn’t long after his arrival at Manchester United that Nemanja Vidic’s name became one which struck fear into strikers up and down the country.
Having been on Sir Alex Ferguson’s radar for a number of years prior to joining the Reds, Vidic eventually signed from Spartak Moscow in January 2006, after Fiorentina had looked favourites to acquire his services.
The Serbian centre-half soon established himself as a regular at Old Trafford, producing a string of dominant displays on the pitch. But while he was revered as the hard man at the heart of United’s defence, there was always more to his game and he went on to wear the captain's armband with pride.
Eight years, 300 appearances, countless honours and even a few goals later, Vidic leaves behind a large pair of boots to fill. MUTV's tribute video features plaudits from his team-mates Anders Lindegaard, Nani, Marouane Fellaini, Phil Jones, Tom Cleverley, Wayne Rooney and of course Rio Ferdinand, with whom Nemanja formed one of the Premier League’s most formidable partnerships. All the best, Vida!
