Edwin van der Sar
Could do little with either goal but did brilliantly to keep scores level in the first half when he saved from close range. Also beat out a strong effort from distance after the break.
It was great to see Gary back on the park in Monaco. He gave away the corner that led to Zenit’s opener but was keen to get forward and provide early crosses. An important 76 minutes on the road to full fitness.
But for the second Zenit goal in which Danny outfoxed Ferdinand, the England defender looked comfortable at the heart of the Reds’ defence. A last-ditch tackle on 34 minutes denied the dangerous Pogrebnyak.
Another brave performance from the big centre back, which he capped with United’s only goal. It was his first since finding the net against Everton in September 2007 and the first time he’s not scored with his head.
Pegged back by the impressive Anyukov, Patrice didn’t get forward as much as we’ve come to expect.
