Wayne hails 'massive' win

Wayne Rooney says beating Manchester City at Eastlands on Sunday was a “massive result”.

The Reds’ no.10 scored the only goal of the game to secure the win and move United to within five points of Chelsea at the final whistle.

“It was a massive win,” Rooney said. “Not necessarily because it was against Manchester City, but because three points are vital, especially with Chelsea and Liverpool playing after us. We simply had to win and I thought we produced a good performance.”

The Reds had more of the ball, more shots on goal and always looked more likely to win the match. Even after Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off in the 68th minute, City failed to assert themselves.

“They put us under a little more pressure in the last 20 minutes but I thought we defended very well as a team and we could have even nicked another goal late in the game. Overall, we deserved the three points.”

Rooney’s strike on 42 minutes was his 100th club career goal.

“We were on top so it was important we got the first goal,” Rooney said. “We
