Star man: Free-scoring striker Jermaine Beckford began his career as a Chelsea trainee, but was released at 19 and only rejoined the pro ranks with Leeds after a prolific spell with non-league Wealdstone. The pacy 26-year-old hit 27 goals in Leeds' run to the League One play-offs last season and has 19 to his name already this term.
Manager: Former Leeds player Simon Grayson returned to Elland Road just over a year ago with the mandate to win promotion back to the Championship. And, after last season's play-off disappointment, his side are well placed to do just that this year. Grayson's managerial career began at Blackpool, whom he guided to League One play-off final glory in 2006/07. His switch to Leeds did not run smoothly as the Seasiders threatened legal action after refusing to accept their manager's resignation.
Referee: Chris Foy has taken charge of two games involving United this season – the Community Shield encounter against Chelsea and October's League Cup win at Barnsley, in which he issued five yellow cards and also sent off Gary Neville.
Rivals watch: All the big guns are in third-round action. On Saturday Liverpool travel to Reading and Middlesbrough welcome Man. City, while holders Chelsea host Watford on Sunday and Arsenal visit West Ham in one of three all-Premier League ties.
