Cup: Blackburn bounce back

Five top-flight sides reached the Carling Cup fifth round on Tuesday night.

Blackburn Rovers joined United in the next round after recovering from their 5-0 drubbing at Chelsea in the league. Sam Allardyce's men warmed up for Saturday’s trip to Old Trafford with a resounding 5-2 win over ten-man Peterborough United - a result that won’t please Sir Alex Ferguson as it denies his son Darren a place in the quarter-finals.

2009 runners up Tottenham Hotspur remained on course to reach a third consecutive final as they emerged 2-0 victors against Everton at White Hart Lane. Tom Huddlestone opened the scoring before Robbie Keane doubled Spurs’ lead in the second half.

Aston Villa needed penalties to book their place in the next round after a stalemate at Sunderland. Stand-in keeper Brad Guzan was the hero as he saved three spot kicks to help his side to a 3-1 shoot-out win.

Finally, Paul Hart led Portsmouth to only their third victory of the season as they beat an under-strength Stoke side 4-0. Former Reds striker Danny Webber was amongst the scorers.

The remaining fourth round fixtures will take place on Wednesday night. Liverpool take on Arsenal at the Emirates, Chelsea host Bolton and Manchester City are at home to Scunthorpe. will bring you all the news of the draw when it takes place this Saturday, 31 October.
