Sir Alex Ferguson said United’s 3-0 win over West Ham was littered with individual excellence, but crucially was characterised by team-play.
United’s goalscorers Nani, Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney, among others, can all be pleased with their personal contributions. But it was the performance as a collective had the manager waxing lyrical after the game.
“It was a very good performance and our possession of the ball was good,” said the boss. “The team performance pleased me most. They all wanted the ball, they wanted to pass and move. It was a good, collective performance.”
Nani was given the Man of the Match award by the host TV station, ESPN, and Sir Alex was delighted with the Portuguese winger’s performance on the right side of midfield.
“It was a terrific goal from Nani, a marvellous goal,” the boss said. “It’s a problem for me because he prefers playing on the right, but [Antonio] Valencia’s form has been outstanding too. It gives us a bit of a problem.”
