Reds draw Scunthorpe

Story updated 31/08/2010

The Reds face a trip into unchartered territory in the Carling Cup with a tie against Scunthorpe United in the third round.

United have never met the Championship side in competitive action and will to Glanford Park for the first time on Wednesday 22 September. Kick-off will be at 19:45 BST and the match will be shown live on Sky Sports.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men are the current Carling Cup holders, of course, after beating Aston Villa 2-1 in February's final at Wembley.
In a memorable cup run, the Reds defeated Wolves (1-0), Barnsley (2-0), Tottenham (2-0) en route to the semi-finals, which produced two memorable encounters with neighbours Manchester City - United winning 4-3 on aggregate.
